This edition of Folk Roots Radio features music from performers at this year’s Hillside Inside, the winter version of the Hillside Festival. Hillside Inside takes place from January 29 – 31 at a variety of venues in downtown Guelph, and includes some great community activities alongside some fabulous musical performances.
This week’s Live & Local reflects the fact that the Christmas season, or the holidays or whatever you like to call this time of year, is rapidly approaching. This week, Brad McEwen, Artistic Director at the Mill Race Folk Society joins us to chat about a couple of fun seasonal events in their calendar. We also include some other musical ways to celebrate this time of year.
This week’s new release hour features new music from Trent Severn, Gary & Whit and Anne Walker and more, alongside a 100% a cappella version of the Gordon Lightfoot classic “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” from Cadence. We also talk to one of the most exciting talent’s on the contemporary folk and roots scene, Benjamin Dakota Rogers.
This week’s Live & Local includes a feature-length interview with singer-songwriter Andy White – originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland but now living in Melbourne, Australia. We also take our usual look at the local music scene including upcoming shows by Nicole Ensing Band, Kevin Breit and Gregory Hoskins and a special fundraiser for local bluesman Mo’ Kauffey who is battling cancer.
This week’s New Release show features an interview with Toronto singer/songwriter James Bruce Moore recorded at the 2015 Folk Music Ontario conference. James has just released his second album, the gorgeous “Soul’s Journey Home”. We also include a selection of some of the great music we’re received in the past few months.
This week’s Live & Local features as interview with Ottawa-based singer-songwriter Lynne Hanson recorded at the 2015 Folk Music Ontario. Lynne releases “7 Deadly Spins”, an album of murder ballads and songs of reckoning, this Halloween! We also continue our review of artists nominated for this year’s Canadian Folk Music Awards (CFMA). Pete’s latest album “Long Way Home” is one of our favourite albums of the year so far. The fact that the album came to us out of the blue made receiving it all that more special. This week we included a special tribute to the sadly departed “Mother of Modern Folk Music” Jean Ritchie, alongside our mystery theme and some new music.

There are no interviews on this week’s show just lots of great music. We’ve received some great new albums in the early part of this year and it only seemed right to make the music the focus of the show. As usual we found time for a new mystery theme and guilty pleasure.
Folk Roots Radio on Valentine’s Day was all about the music, a lot of it new. Alongside a large number of love and heartbreak songs we also found room for sets celebrating Louis Riel Day and a new tribute album honouring the 1964 Johnny Cash album Bitter Tears – Ballads of the American Indian.
