Episode 215: Lynne Hanson

This week’s Live & Local features as interview with Ottawa-based singer-songwriter Lynne Hanson recorded at the 2015 Folk Music Ontario. Lynne releases “7 Deadly Spins”, an album of murder ballads and songs of reckoning, this Halloween! We also continue our review of artists nominated for this year’s Canadian Folk Music Awards (CFMA). The award winners will be announced in Edmonton the weekend of November 6-8. For more information, visit folkawards.ca

We started off the hour with Matthew Byrne, lead singer and fiddle-player from Newfoundland’s The Dardanelles. Matthew has received CFMA nominations in the Traditional Singer of the Year and Traditional album of the Year categories for his excellent solo album “Hearts & Heroes”. We were incredibly impressed with Matthew’s showcase at the recent Folk Music Ontario. This week we played his wonderful version of Norman Blake’s “What Fortunes Guide A Sailor”.

And we followed that with two artists nominated in the CFMA Young Performer of the Year category, Benjamin Dakota Rogers and Mira Meikle. We recorded an in-depth interview with Benjamin at this year’s Folk Music Ontario conference – we’ll be bringing that to a future show. And Mira was part of this year’s youth programme – as Benjamin was last year. We’ve again taped an interview with all the participants – both mentors and youth, and we’ll be bringing that to an upcoming show too. Check out our youth programme documentary from the 2014 Folk Music Ontario conference if you haven’t already done so. It’s very inspiring and well worth a listen. You can find it on the website here.

We wrapped this week’s set of music from 2015 Canadian Folk Music Award nominees with three artists nominated for The Oliver Schroer Pushing The Boundaries Award; Kevin Breit, Dana Sipos and The Shoeless. You can find in depth interviews with Kevin Breit and Dana Sipos elsewhere on the website.
