Folk Roots Radio Episode 407: feat. Gathering Sparks & More New Releases

Gathering Sparks are the graceful collision of Jane Lewis and Eve Goldberg – musical friends who bonded over finely tuned harmonies and the craft of songwriting. Their inclusive approach embraces folk, pop, blues and gospel influences tastefully played on acoustic guitar, piano, accordion, and ukulele. Eve and Jane join us on Episode 407 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about their music. They also play three live songs for us. It’s a great interview, and definitely worth checking out. Gathering Sparks – Folk Roots Radio at FMO

Gathering Sparks are the graceful collision of Jane Lewis and Eve Goldberg – musical friends who bonded over finely tuned harmonies and the craft of songwriting, their inclusive approach embracing folk, pop, blues and gospel influences tastefully played on acoustic guitar, piano, accordion, and ukulele. Gathering Sparks are currently working on the second album, the first as a duo – original member Sam Turton leaving the band after the release of their self-titled debut album. Jane Lewis and Eve Goldberg joined Jan Hall in the Folk Roots Radio studio at the 2018 Folk Music Ontario conference to chat about their music, and sing three songs live. Award-winning singer-songwriter Jory Nash is back in Guelph on Friday November 6 for a show at Silence with another fine singer-songwriter, Guelph’s own Jane Lewis. Jory’s latest album “The Many Hats of Jory Nash”, a beautifully textured album of folk and folk-pop in the classic singer-songwriter tradition, was released earlier this year to glowing reviews, and has since garnered Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for Contemporary Singer of the Year and Producer of the Year. We caught up with Jory at home in Toronto to chat about his upcoming Guelph show. Stephen Fearing with Jane Lewis

Stephen Fearing is back in the Guelph ON area for an Eden Mills Community Hall fundraiser on Saturday April 4 2015 at 7 p.m. Stephen’s solo performance will draw on his eighth and most recent solo recording “Between Hurricanes” (2013). Guelph based singer-songwriter Jane Lewis, who released her debut self-titled album in 2014, will be the opening act. It is hoped that the concert will help pay for the ongoing refurbishment and energy-retrofit of the venue. Check out our recent interview with Stephen Fearing HERE.

Our Favourite Albums Of 2014

So here they are… my ten favourite albums of 2014. As you can imagine, it wasn’t easy to narrow this list down to the Top 10 which is why I’ve included the next five as honourable mentions. And to be honest, any of the albums in that group could easily have made it into my Best of 2014 on a different day. Indeed, I could easily have included another five after that… and another five after that, but I needed to draw a line somewhere which I duly did.

Gathering Sparks at Cafe Pyrus

Gathering Sparks, the wonderful new trio featuring Eve Goldberg, Jane Lewis, and Sam Turton will be appearing at Cafe Pyrus in Kitchener ON on Thursday October 23 at 7:30 p.m. Gathering Sparks embrace blues, gospel, folk, and pop while delivering engaging songs on acoustic and slide guitar, piano, accordion, ukulele, and banjo. Their debut 6-song CD, released in April 2014, has just been nominated for a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for “Vocal Group of the Year”. Whether they are singing an a capella sea shanty, busting out kazoos for a jazzy swing tune, getting down and low with the blues, or leading a well-known classic, Gathering Sparks performances make fans out of listeners with their stellar harmonies and fine musicianship. Jane Lewis – Stay With Me

Guelph-based singer songwriter Jane Lewis releases her first solo album, “Stay With Me” on September 26, 2014 at Dublin St United Church in Guelph. The show starts at 8 p.m. Stay With Me is a piano-based folk-pop-roots album that blends engaging melodies and well-crafted lyrics, with gorgeous production that allows the vocals to stand up against the beautifully well-balanced musical accompaniment. The album features Jane Lewis on piano joined by a stellar core band of  Sam Turton (guitar), Jesse Turton (bass) and Adam Bowman (drums & percussion). Special guests on the album include Jason Fowler, Eve Goldberg, Katherine Wheatley, Tannis Slimmon and Doug Wilde among others. The album was produced by Sam Turton and engineered by Nik Tjelios. James Gordon – In The Studio

James Gordon has taken a break from his community activism and political aspirations to record his latest CD (the 25th – we’re counting), Coyote’s Calling. Coyote’s Calling features performances by James Gordon with a backing band that includes his sons Evan and Geordie, as well as Katherine Wheatley, Jane Lewis, Jude Vadala and Louisa Krátká.

James joined us in the studio on Saturday January 5 2013; the first opportunity for anyone in Guelph to hear tracks from Coyote’s Calling plus a new song from James, “Idle No More” written especially for the aboriginal rights campaign.
