Episode 188: Kerri Powers

This week’s Folk Roots Radio features an interview with Connecticut based singer-songwriter Kerri Powers. After years out of the spotlight to raise a family, Kerri returned to the music scene in 2014 with her stunning self-titled Americana blues and roots album, “Kerri Powers”, a little bit country, a little bit bluesy and very rootsy it was one of our favourite albums of 2014. As usual, there’s lots of new music on this week’s show alongside our mystery theme and guilty pleasure.

There are no interviews on this week’s show just lots of great music. We’ve received some great new albums in the early part of this year and it only seemed right to make the music the focus of the show. As usual we found time for a new mystery theme and guilty pleasure.

This week’s Folk Roots Radio featured an interview about keeping music live and local with Al Robitaille from Georgetown Musictown and Mike Willis from Uncorked on Main, a new tapas & wine bar and music venue in Georgetown Ontario. Trevor Gordon Hall “Mind Heart Fingers”

Trevor Gordon Hall has just released “Mind Heart Fingers”, the follow up to 2011’s “Entelechy”. We had a chance to chat with Trevor shortly before his appearance at this past summer’s Mariposa Folk Festival. If you love rich, creative guitar music with a twist, you’ll love Mind Heart Fingers. Check out the video of Trevor playing acoustic guitar on the beautiful “The Blue Hour”. I’ll admit that my knowledge of acoustic guitar tunings is rudimentary – however, for guitar aficionados, this song is apparently played in Nashville or high strung tuning (using only octave strings from a 12 string pack). This beautiful instrumental album was recorded during the summer of 2014 by Grammy Winning Producer Will Ackerman. You can find it in all of the usual places, including, for a physical copy, on CDBaby. For more information: visit trevorgordonhall.com.

Trevor Gordon Hall – The Interview

Philadelphia based acoustic instrumentalist Trevor Gordon Hall is heading to this year’s Mariposa Folk Festival. With two successful acoustic albums under his belt, Trevor’s musical creative aspirations were upsized by the birth of the Kalimbatar, an innovative acoustic guitar that features the Kalimba, a sub-Saharan thumb piano. Trevor’s most recent album is Entelechy (2011). We caught up with him this week at home. For more information on Trevor Gordon Hall, visit trevorgordonhall.com. Music: Trevor Gordon Hall, Missing You and Kalimbatar from Entelechy (2011, Candy Rat Records).

Trevor Gordon Hall

Trevor Gordon Hall is bringing his Kalimbatar to this summer’s Mariposa Folk Festival. His what, I hear you say? His kalimbatar. It’s his own invention, an acoustic guitar with a kalimba – an African thumb piano (and common in sub-Saharan Africa), attached to the side of it. It’s pretty nifty and produces an incredibly full and beautiful sound, that is almost mesmeric in quality. Check out the attached video of Trevor playing the kalimbatar. You can find other videos on his website at trevorgordonhall.com. We’re impressed – so much so that we’re working on an interview. In case you don’t know, the Mariposa Folk festival runs from July 4-6 2014 in beautiful Tudhope Park up in Orillia. To check out all the details and pick up tickets, visit mariposa folk.com. It promises to be a great weekend!

Episode 155: The Wailing Jennys

Folk Roots Radio on June 21 2014 (Episode 155) featured interviews with Nicky Mehta from The Wailin Jennys and Mike Hill, Artistic Director at the Mariposa Folk Festival.
