Playlist: Episode 164

One of the best things about heading off to another summer music festival is knowing that you have the perfect fill-in to keep your studio chair warm. DJ MacDee sat in for me while I was at the Eaglewood Folk Festival on August 23 (Episode 164) You enjoyed DJ MacDee on Folk Roots Radio. Now enjoy his playlist!

Hello Folk Roots Radio! It was nice to be able to sit in for Jan again while she was away at Eaglewood.

James Gordon led off the show with “The Great Duncan Heist”, a song about locals breaking in to the Duncan Showroom Garage in Duncan BC and making off with 30 James Gordon CDs! They tried to hawk them at local record stores for a little cash. Over his many albums, James always has a personal story to tell. This song is definitely one of my favourites.

The Mystery Theme this week was ‘Heaven’. It was when I heard Brandon Issak’s “Dressed 4 Heaven” that I realized I could build a set around that song. Brandon works out of the Yukon and is also known as the front man and main songwriter/guitar player for the popular Canadian jump band, The Twisters from Vancouver. He’s been nominated for many blues awards. Dylan‘s “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” came easily to mind as well as Simply Red. There were other obvious ones that I considered and discarded: Clapton (too syrupy); Loverboy (too pop); Fred Astaire (nice but not a fit for the show).

The next set featured some good pickin’ from Wendell Ferguson, Amos Garrett, David Wilcox and Ken Whiteley.

This week’s Guilty Pleasure wasn’t so much a song as a genre – 1960’s Doo Wop hits. I chose Hank Ballard & The Midnighters. Of course, I also had two songs in this week’s Mystery Theme: Billy Ward & His Dominoes and Eddie Cochran.

Next up was our own Mo’ Kauffey, who’s committed to his love. Meanwhile, the Traveling Wilburys are getting dumped and Michael Timmins is leaving. You can catch Mo Kauffey’s “Blues Around the Block”, Monday nights on CFRU 93.3fm.

Iceland has a vibrant music scene, well beyond Bjork and Sigur Ros. Today’s show featured seven Icelandic mainstream folk and rock artists.

Well, that’s about all we have time for this week. Thanks again to DJ MacDee for sitting in, while I was at Eaglewood. Thanks MacDee!

You can find the full playlist for the show below. And… thanks to all the artists who share their music with us, and thank you for listening. We’ll see you next week!

You can listen to the show again in the CFRU 93.3fm archive HERE.
