Folk Roots Radio Episode 555: feat. Boreal & More Songs For The Snowy Season

Folk trio Boreal, who feature singer-songwriters Katherine Wheatley, Tannis Slimmon, and Angie Nussey, join us on Episode 555 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about their holiday show, Songs For The Snowy Season. In early December, each year, Boreal heads out on the road for a series of shows that celebrate winter and the upcoming Christmas season. Things are going to be a bit different this year because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Instead of a whole series of shows, there will be just one performance – a FREE live-streamed performance direct from the River Run Centre in Guelph ON on December 11 at 8 p.m. It’s a fun interview, and it’s always great to be able to chat with Katherine, Tannis, and Angie about their Christmas show, especially as this year everyone, wherever they are, can enjoy one of the highlights of our holiday season. We continue the snow song theme through the rest of the episode and also feature music by Ellis Delaney, The Hello Darlins, Dayna Manning, RUNA, Ted Yoder, Tara MacLean & Adam Brazier, and Melissa Ferrick. Check out the full playlist below.

Interview

Boreal featuring the fabulous harmonies of three great singer-songwriters: Guelph ON’s Katherine Wheatley and Tannis Slimmon and Orillia ON’s Angie Nussey, who stepped into Jude Vadala’s big shoes last year when Jude decided it was time to give up performing so that she could focus on being a grandparent.

Alongside the upcoming live-streamed show, Boreal have also released a new single, a Katherine Wheatley song, “Snow Falls Down”. Kathrine Wheatley recorded the guitar and vocal tracks in her home studio and sent them on to Angie and Tannis to add their harmonies, as well as mandolin and keyboard tracks.

We also played another relatively new song by Boreal, “Warm Hands”, which was written by Angie Nussey about her father. It also comes with a great video featuring photos of fans with their fathers.

Boreal are currently working on more new songs, and are planning to release a new song a month throughout the year, prior to the debut of a full album in time for Songs for the Snowy Season 2021. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that life is somewhat back to normal by then.

If you’d like to register for the Boreal livestream on Friday December 11 at 8 p.m. – and, remember, it’s FREE, all you need to do is sign up for the River Run Centre Spotlight newsletter. You can do that HERE. They’ll send you you the link on the day of the show

The performance will also be somewhat interactive with the opportunity to send in questions for two short chat sessions that will take place during the evening. You will also be able to send holiday wishes to your friends and family on the other side of the country, or even the other side of the planet.

That’s all we have time for. Thanks to all the artists who share their music with us, and thank you for listening. We have lots of great music and interviews to bring you on future episodes.

If you enjoy the music we play on this show and want to support the artists – many of whom aren’t able to play live at the moment because of the Covid-19 pandemic, don’t just stream their music – that earns them much less than a penny per play. Instead, buy their music – and really make a difference to their income. They’ll love you for it!
