Folk Roots Radio Episode 510: feat. Miranda Mulholland... In Conversation - By Appointment Or Chance

Miranda Mulholland joins us on Episode 510 of Folk Roots Radio for a wonderful in-depth conversation about her second solo album, the JUNO-nominated “By Appointment or Chance”. Classically trained on violin and in voice, Miranda is also a member of the roots duo Harrow Fair with Andrew Penner from the Sun Parlour Players. Harrow Fair released their own second album “Sins We Made” a few weeks ago. Outside of her own musical creativity, Miranda Mulholland runs the record label Roaring Girl Records and the Muskoka Music Festival, and continues to travel the world advocating for fair remuneration for creators. Needless to say, there was a lot to talk about, which is why we’ve devoted the whole of this episode to an hour plus of Miranda Mulholland… In Conversation, on Folk Roots Radio. Check out the full playlist below.

Interview

“By Appointment or Chance”, the second solo album from Miranda Mulholland, was recorded live off the floor at ‘The Swiss Cottage’, a beautiful wooden shed house concert venue in the village of Twyford in England. The album was produced by British guitarist and producer Tali Trow, who also plays on the album alongside Miranda (fiddle, vocals), Tara Minton (harp, vocals) and Joe Phillips (bass, vocals). By Appointment or Chance has been nominated for a 2020 JUNO for Roots Traditional Album of the Year, however, because of the on-going Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 award ceremony has been postponed. You can find more information about when they will be rescheduled at junoawards.ca.

Miranda’s debut solo album, the very well-received “Whipping Boy” from 2014, was the first release on her own boutique record label Roaring Girl Records. Roaring Girl Records has since developed into the wonderful home for a diverse roster of artists. For more information, visit roaringgirlrecords.com.

Harrow Fair feature Miranda Mulholland on fiddle, and multi-instrumentalist Sun Parlour Players‘ Andrew Penner on dobro, guitar and more; the duo’s sound revolves around wonderful stomping songs that echo early country and rock n roll, and gritty ballads that manage to sound both sweet and haunting at the same time. Miranda and Andrew joined us on Episode 504 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about their second album “Sins We Made”. You can listen to that episode HERE.

Miranda Mulholland has played fiddle and/or sung on over 70 studio recordings alongside film and TV show scores for shows such as “Maudie” and “Republic of Doyle”.  She has performed live with the likes of Jim Cuddy, Steven Page, Calexico, Joel Plaskett, Rose Cousins, Alan Doyle, Raine Maida, Dan Mangan, The Rattlesnake Choir, The Great Lake Swimmers and The Mahones, as well as her own fiddle trio, the much missed Belle Starr with Kendel Carson and Stephanie Cadman.

Miranda Mulholland is also the founder of the Muskoka Music Festival (formerly, Sawdust City Music Festival), a multi venue roots and folk music festival which takes place in historic Gravenhurst, ON each summer. The festival is now heading into its fourth year, and currently scheduled for July 31 – August  2 2020, though that is subject to Covid-19 distancing measures being eased. For more information, visit muskokamusicfestival.com.

Miranda is also heavily involved as an advocate for fair remuneration for creators. She is Chair of the Music Canada Advisory Council, and through that role reached out to CONNECT Music Licensing to create the COVID-19 Music Artist Impact Survey. Miranda  was recently presented with a 2019 Global IP Champion award by the US Chamber of Commerce. She was also a runner up to Margaret Atwood for 2019’s Artist of the Year in The Globe and Mail.

If you enjoy the music we play on this show and want to support the artists – many of whom aren’t able to play live at the moment because of the Covid-19 pandemic, don’t just stream their music – that earns them much less than a penny per play. Instead, buy their music – and really make a difference to their income. They’ll love you for it!
