Carly Thomas – Folk Roots Radio Interview

Singer-songwriter Carly Thomas was born in Thailand and raised in Argentina and France, before returning to her family roots in London Ontario. Carly Thomas first came to our attention through “I Remember You”, her beautiful and thought-provoking song written for the How We Survive teen suicide awareness campaign. Known as much for her powerful lyrics as her engaging live performance, Carly has played everywhere from street festivals in Paris to the folk circuit in Manhattan. Big Little Lions – The Interview

Big Little Lions started out as a long-distance songwriting partnership between two established songwriters, Juno award winning Helen Austin from Vancouver Island and Cincinnati-based Paul Otten. In their two-year collaborative career they have produced two E.P.s and a very well-received long-player “A Little Frayed, A Little Torn”, that has been nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year. Award-winning singer-songwriter Jory Nash is back in Guelph on Friday November 6 for a show at Silence with another fine singer-songwriter, Guelph’s own Jane Lewis. Jory’s latest album “The Many Hats of Jory Nash”, a beautifully textured album of folk and folk-pop in the classic singer-songwriter tradition, was released earlier this year to glowing reviews, and has since garnered Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for Contemporary Singer of the Year and Producer of the Year. James Bruce Moore – The Interview

Toronto-based singer/songwriter James Bruce Moore has just released his second album, the mystical and soul-stirring “Soul’s Journey Home”. Whereas his well-received debut, 2012’s Lisbeth (named after his late wife) featured a folk, country, and jazz palette; the beautiful and inspiring new album is more folky but includes the prominent use of a nine-piece string section, with arrangements by Aaron Davis. The album was produced by renowned bassist George Koller (Loreena McKennitt, The Shuffle Demons) with musical support from, among others, Steve Briggs, Denis Keldie, Mark Mariash, Kirsten Rea, and David Piltch. Lynne Hanson – The Interview

Ottawa-based singer-songwriter Lynne Hanson is releasing “7 Deadly Spins”, an album of murder ballads and songs of reckoning this Halloween! The album recorded in Ottawa with her band The Good Intentions and produced by Lynn Miles features seven original songs with murder and its impact as the central theme. The Ottawa CD Release takes place at Greenfields, 900 Greenback Road at 9:30 p.m. Admission $15. Lynne will be in Guelph on November 20 2015 for a show at the wonderful listening venue Silence. Fred Eaglesmith on Tour

Fred Eaglesmith’s travelling show lands in Mount Pleasant (October 23) and Cambridge (October 24) in Ontario this month. Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Jenny Ritter is coming to Guelph for $10/PWYC show at Silence on October 21 at 8 p.m. with support from South-Western Ontario based The Oh Chays. Jenny spent a decade playing with roots outfit The Gruff, before striking out under her own name. She’s just released “Raised by Wolves”, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed album “Bright Mainland” (2012). “Raised By Wolves” is full of songs that tell stories from her “unconventional” upbringing deep in the woods on Vancouver Island featuring dreamy landscapes, pastoral imagery and some unusual people. When not touring, Jenny singlehandedly runs two rock choirs in East Vancouver. Glen MacNeil – The Interview

A veteran of the South-Western Ontario music scene, singer-songwriter Glen MacNeil has just released his debut album “Where The Heart Remains”, a fine selection of beautifully-crafted songs focusing on relationships, family and life in general. The album, produced by John Law (of The Laws) features acoustic guitar and vocals from Glen, with John Law on guitar, resophonic guitar, mandolin, organ, and backing vocals from John & Michele Law. Linda McRae – The Interview

Linda McRae has just released her latest album, the Steve Dawson produced “Shadow Trails”, an album of songs inspired by workshops that she and her partner – retired rancher turned poet, James Whitmire have been doing with at risk youth. The album features Linda McRae on guitar, banjo and vocals with Steve Dawson (guitar, additional banjo and backing vocals), Steve O’Connor (keyboards) and a rhythm section of John Dymond (bass) and Gary Craig (drums) alongside a group of special guests that includes Ray Bonneville (harmonica) and Fats Kaplin (fiddle). The album is chock full of raw, honest reflections on hardship delivered in her own inimitable rough-hewn style. The Once at Hillside

The Once are Geraldine Hollett, Phil Churchill and Andrew Dale. They’ve been making quite the name for themselves for their live shows and their recorded work. Their latest album – their third, and first on Nettwerk is “Departures”, and quite a departure it is, featuring much more of their own original songwriting alongside some choice covers. The album has garnered some rave reviews, and they’ve just come off a world tour with Passenger (English folk-rock singer-songwriter Michael David Rosenberg). Its clear that this band are going places. We caught up with Geraldine, Phil and Andrew shortly after they came off the Lake Stage at this summer’s Hillside Festival. Perch Creek – The Interview

Perch Creek are an Australian five-piece multi-instrumental, harmony-driven roots group featuring four siblings who put on an amazing live show and are quite clearly lots of fun in their off-stage life, too. They were on tour in Canada this summer while promoting their new single “Mama Sings”. The band features Christi Hodgkins – harmonica, trombone, saw, vocals, Lear Hodgkins – drums, washboard, vocals, Eileen Hodgkins – guitar, banjo-uke, tap dancing, vocals, Camilla Hodgkins – keys, banjo, vocals and the only non-Hodgkins (or perhaps, now an honorary Hodgkins) James Chandler on double bass, electric bass, vocals. Perch Creek got together as the Perch Creek Family Jugband in 2006, recording two full-length albums “Tall Tales” (2011) and “Jumping on the Highwire” (2014), which was nominated for Best Independent Country Album for the Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards). They’ve since moved to Melbourne and will be working on a new album in the near future. Perch Creek have toured extensively across Australia, Europe, the UK and now Canada and deliver unforgettable, high-energy live performances. Southern Ontario roots songstress Allison Brown is just about to release her latest album “Stitches and Incisions”. Featuring five originals and three classics, “Stitches And Incisions” was recorded and co-produced by Andy Magoffin at the House Of Miracles in Preston, Ontario. Allison is just about to embark on a 95 day tour with mandolin accompanist, Uncle Dan Henshall that will take her from Ontario out to Newfoundland, before heading to Manitoba via Northern Ontario for a Home Routes house concert tour. Sultans Of String – The Interview

The Sultans of String brilliantly blend together Spanish Flamenco, Arabic folk, Cuban rhythms, and French Manouche Gypsy-jazz musical influences to create a wonderfully rich cinematic sound that is almost intoxicating. The band is lead by 6-string violinist Chris McKhool who grew up in a Lebanese-Egyptian (Makhoul) family and guitarist Kevin Laliberté who write much of the material. Always pushing boundaries, their latest album “Symphony” (2013, Sony/Red) was recorded with a full orchestra while their new release, “Subcontinental Drift” (due in September) will feature sitar virtuoso Anwar Khurshid. Whether playing as a duo, five piece or with a full orchestra, their live show is something to behold – a fiery violin dances with a rumba-flamenco guitar while a bass lays down a funky unstoppable world rhythm groove that can’t help but bring a smile to your face as an irresistible urge forces you to get involved whether that is by clapping along or getting up to dance. Rebecca Lappa – The Interview

Although still a teenager, Rebecca Lappa is already a prolific songwriter, having written over 200 songs in her career so far. All four of the albums she has released to date have been nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for “Young Performer of the Year”. Her most recent album, 2014’s “Ode to Tennyson” uses as its source material, the collected works of English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Rebecca joined us for an interview and impromptu session at the Folk Music Ontario Conference this past October. Rebecca shows amazing drive for someone so young.
