Ukulele bluesman Manitoba Hal released a great double live album “Live in Ghent” earlier this year – the perfect introduction to his music. Hal joined us in the Quantum Sound Productions studio in Kingsville Ontario to record an edition of the Sun Parlour Coffee House Sessions during which he chatted about the new project and played a few songs live. We’re pleased to bring that interview and a couple of songs from the session to Episode 336 of Folk Roots Radio. We also take a look at more of the latest new releases. Colorado bluesman Mo’ Kauffey moved to Guelph 15 years ago, and since then he’s become a stalwart of the Guelph music scene, and a perfect example of what a local music scene should be all about. Local musicians getting out there and sharing their musical gifts with the community as often as possible. Well, unfortunately Mo’ has been diagnosed with cancer. And for that reason all of his friends – and they are legion, are getting together to raise money so that Mo’ can get access to the best treatments available, in Canada – and beyond. Join the Mo’ Town team for a very special fundraiser on Tuesday November 17 at the Royal Electric Bar & Public Eatery.

Sarah Jane Scouten brings her unique blend of roots music back to Guelph on Saturday May 23 for a Folk Roots Radio presents… show at Silence, Guelph’s premier listening venue. For this show Sarah will be joined by Alan Mackie (from The Bombadils and Jaron Freeman Fox and the Opposite of Everything) on stand-up bass. The opening act for the evening will be Guelph’s own bluegrass band The Chesterfield Trio, the abbreviated version of Chester Field and The Sofa Kings. It promises to be a great night so get your tickets early! We caught up with Sarah at home in Toronto to chat about the Guelph show, and her most recent album, “The Cape” which was nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards. Episode 194 of Folk Roots Radio featured another interview recorded at the Folk Music Ontario conference this past October. Winnipeg’s JD Edwards joined us for an impromptu session and an opportunity to chat about his music with both The JD Edwards Band and his new project with former Wailin’ Jenny Cara Luft – The Small Glories. The Funky Mamas, four great Guelph folk-roots musicians who focus on producing music for children, are part of a very special show at the ANAF club, Guelph on May 24 2014. And this time… they will be playing music for adults! The event billed as a Roots Rock Revival Party is a fundraiser for both the Guelph Children’s Festival and the Seed Community Food Hub. Also on the bill are Chesterfield and the Sofa Kings and Monk-E Zoot. The event kicks off at 9 p.m. Admission is only $5 (PWYC) which sounds like a great deal for a great cause!
