Folk Roots Radio Episode 299: Gary & Whit Interview & More New Releases

On this edition of Folk Roots Radio we head out to Corner Brook in Newfoundland to talk to folk-pop duo Gary & Whit, about “Matches”, an album of beautiful songs, with engaging lyrics and gorgeous harmonies that really connects with the listener – and another of our favourite albums of 2016. And as always, we take a look at some of the latest new releases. For more information about the music of Gary & Whit, visit garyandwhit.com. Photography: Candace Cunning and Dru Kennedy.

We started off the hour with some new releases including Ivas John from Cape Giradeau in Missouri with some fingerstyle guitar, mandolin, standup bass and dobro on the track “Here I Am” from his latest “Good Days A Comin”, out now on Right Side Up Records. We also heard from Winnipeg’s Kevin Roy with the title track from his latest album, “Heartworn Highways”, the follow up to 2014’s Taller Than the Trees EP and co-produced with Lloyd Peterson (The Weakerthans). And that track, a murder ballad, was written almost exclusively using old outlaw country song titles. And finally, Canadian singer/songwriter Doug McArthur with the title track from his latest album Tears Like Rain.

The Mayhemingways are joining Bill & Joel Plaskett – that’s Canadian pop-rocker and singer/songwriter Joel Plaskett with his dad Bill, on tour in support of their first full-length album together “Solidarity”. Bill & Joel will also be heading to Massey Hall in Toronto to take part in their Live at Massey Hall concert film series. For more information about the tour, visit joelplaskett.com.

Thanks to all the artists who share their music with us, and thank you for listening. We have a lot of great music and interviews to bring you on future shows. I hope you’ll join us!
