Interview

Over The Moon are a Canadian roots/swing duo featuring award-winning multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Suzanne Levesque and Craig Bignell. Suzanne and Craig met, fell in love, got married and discovered that they could make beautiful music together. They live on a ranch in the foothills of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, and “Moondancer”, their debut album, celebrates life in the Canadian west on a set of songs that move from 40’s sounding western swing and Appalachian old-time, to cowboy blues. While on tour in Ontario, Over The Moon joined us in the Folk Roots Radio studio to chat about their music and play three songs from Moondancer live. Show Notes

Notes about some of the new music on our radar that made it into Episode 385 of Folk Roots Radio.

Toronto singer-songwriter and guitarist Noah Zacharin has just released his eighth album “A Startle Of Wings”, the follow up to his critically acclaimed 2016 electric album “Strange Rider”, one of our favourite albums of that year. A Startle of Wings sees Noah playing almost strictly solo on 14 songs that show the breadth of his work as a songwriter, on a stripped down recording he describes as best enjoyed in a quiet space with headphones. And, as he says… he’d like you to listen to his thoughts. On this episode we play the opening track “Morning Come On” which is quite frankly just stunning. This is an album that must be explored and savoured.

The Andrew Collins Trio has just released two new albums, “Tongue” – an album of favourite covers songs alongside one Andrew Collins original and “Groove” – an all instrumental album. On this episode we play their version of Roger Miller’s “Leaving’s Not the Only Way to Go” from Tongue. We’ll dip into “Groove” on a future episode. Check out our recent interview with Andrew Collins where he discusses the new recording project HERE.

“The human mind is a wonderful thing, it starts working before you’re born, and doesn’t stop till you sit down to write a song.” Roger Miller

Prolific Quebec composer and acoustic guitarist Francois Couture has a new album out. This time around it’s a very enjoyable duo album with fiddler Stéphanie Labbé, “Bois de coulonge” (2018, Disques Boghei) which features 15 original Francois Couture tunes written in a folk style.

And that’s all we have time for, this time around. Thanks to all the artists who share their music with us, and thank you for listening. We have a lot of great music and interviews to bring you on future shows. I hope you’ll join us!
