Folk Roots Radio Episode 207: feat. Peter Boyer & Clela Errington

Episode 207 of Folk Roots Radio features an excerpt from a live interview and session recorded with singer-songwriter Clela Errington for Folk Roots Radio Overtime. Clela will be part of Erin Roots, a new monthly live roots music series taking place in Erin ON. This week’s show also featured lots of new music including an extended set from a fabulous new album of protest songs from the UK, Land of Hope & Fury.

This week’s mystery theme was all about the month of “September”. Not too much of a stretch for that then, as we’re only a few days into the month! By way of compensation, we also found time for a Labour Day set featuring a short 2013 interview with singer-songwriter Peter Boyer from Same Latitude as Rome discussing his tribute to the Canadian labour movement, “Union Man”. You can find that song on the band’s great new album, “Early Days”.

Land of Hope & Fury is an album of protest songs born out of what the project organizers describe as crushing disappointment with the results of the May 2015 UK general election. The cathartic release, out now on Union Music Store features 16 great songs from musicians from the UK folk and roots scene, that focus on issues such as inequality and disenfranchisement that are as relevant to life in 2015 in Canada and the US as they are to life in the UK. All proceeds from Land of Hope & Fury will be donated to charity 38 Degrees. Four songs from the album are included on this week’s show. At the end of the set we also included a protest song released to coincide with the upcoming Canadian general election on October 19. “There’s Always Money For A War” was written by Ian Robb and Shelley Posen and features The Finest Kind with Brian Sanderson & Graham Lindsey. It’s a great song in the folk tradition – the video accompanying the release is also worth checking out.

“Erin Roots” is a new monthly roots music series taking place at The Busholme Inn in the Town of Erin ON. Erin Roots is an collaboration between Erin Radio and Folk Roots Radio. The aim of the series is to bring affordable great live roots music to Erin while, at the same time, recording the shows for future broadcast on Erin Radio. The first Erin Roots show takes on Saturday September 12 at The Busholme Inn and features two great singer-songwriters Tannis Slimmon and Clela Errington.
