Episode 202: Lizzy Hoyt

Episode 202 of Folk Roots Radio featured an interview with Alberta-based vocalist and songwriter Lizzy Hoyt who came into our mobile studio at the Folk Music Ontario Conference this past October to chat about her music and her latest album, the wonderful “New Lady On The Prairie”. Lizzy will be appearing at this year’s Kingsville Folk Festival from August 7-9 in Kingsville Ontario. As usual we also found time to include a good selection of new music alongside our mystery theme and guilty pleasure.

This week’s mystery theme featured seven songs about the start of summer. Not exactly challenging and perhaps a little predicable as mystery themes go, but hey… it’s time to celebrate it, nevertheless. And I hope that where ever you are you have a good one!

For this week’s guilty pleasure we headed back to 1966 for Frank Sinatra and “Summer Wind”. The perfect way to weave summer and romance together in one song, “Summer Wind” was written in 1965 and featured music by Heinz Meier with English lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song was first recorded by Wayne Newton before reaching #25 in the US when released by Sinatra.

Thanks to Phil for suggesting we play “Summer Wind” on this week’s show. If you have a guilty pleasure you’d like to share – that song you still love though you think other people would find it unfashionable (believe me, they won’t), get in touch. We’d love to play it for you! And, if you have a good story about why you love that song, so much the better.

Well, that’s all we have time for this week. Check out the full playlist with artist links below and share your love for all the great folk and roots music out there. Thanks to all the artists who share their music with us, and thank you for listening. We’ll see you next week! You can listen to this show again on Mixcloud by following the link below.
