Episode 271: Chris Coole

On this episode, we talk to Toronto based banjo player, guitarist and singer Chris Coole about his latest solo album “The Tumbling River, and other stories”, the follow up to the critically-acclaimed “Old Dog”. It’s an excellent interview and well worth checking out. As usual we include some of the latest new releases in the mix, alongside a tribute to Georgetown ON fiddler, Suzanne Marie Hnatiw. Chris Coole’s The Tumbling River features twelve songs (eight originals, 4 covers) that tell some great stories with a wonderfully rich but subtle musical accompaniment from Chris alongside some of the best roots players on the Toronto scene – Burke Carrol (Pedal Steel), Andrew Collins (Mandolin, Mandola, Mandocello), Brian Kobayakawa (Bowed Bass), Ivan Rosenberg (Dobro), Simone Schmidt (Vocals, Guitar), Kristine Schmitt (Vocals) and John Showman (Fiddle). You can check out the interview HERE.

Georgetown Ontario fiddler Suzanne Marie Hnatiw sadly passed away this week. Suzanne was a classically trained violinist who took to the fiddle with great enthusiasm as part of the quartet Classic Folk with Bob Gee, Jim Broughton and Wendi Hunter, and, later, brought her fiddle and voice to the trio Second Wind, that also featured Wendi Hunter and Sharon Bieck-Shangrow.

Suzanne’s vocals and instrumental work were captivating and came straight from her big heart. It was pure chemistry when these ladies performed and you could hear a pin drop during the first, middle and last set of their show. They could sing anything they wanted and the audience just wanted more. (Hugh Hunter, Midnight Special Instruments)
