Kevin Harvey from Durham County Poets

Durham County Poets are five guys from the Chateauguay Valley in Quebec who have played in blues bands, gospel groups, Cajun, vaudeville, folk, rock and country bands. Since coming together as the Durham County Poets they have developed a sound that is uniquely their own. A collective blend of styles from Dan Hicks to James Taylor, the Band to Leon Redbone, they are a melting pot of inspired tunes to enjoy. They released their first album “When The River Flows” in 2012, and have just released their follow-up, the intriguingly titled “Chikkaboodah Stew”. JT Nero from Birds of Chicago

The Birds of Chicago should be very familiar to regular listeners to Folk Roots Radio. We’re big fans of the band that features JT Nero from JT and the Clouds and Ally Russell from Po’ Girl. How much do we love them? Well we’ve already had them join us for a live studio appearance on the show and now we’re getting excited because they will be back in Canada in early July for appearances at the Mariposa Folk Festival (July 4-6) and the Vancouver Island MusicFest (July 11-13). Birds of Chicago are one of the hardest working bands on the folk scene today, they tour almost constantly. Fortunately they do take a break now and again. Nicky Mehta from The Wailin’ Jennys

The Wailin’ Jennys play the Enwave Theatre at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto on Saturday June 21 2014. Tickets are $35 and are available online here. Since their humble beginnings in Winnipeg, the Jennys have grown to become one to the most beloved folk acts on the international scene. Founding members Ruth Moody (vocals, guitar, accordion, banjo, bodhrán) and Nicky Mehta (vocals, guitar, harmonica, drums, ukulele) along with New York-based Heather Masse (vocals, upright bass) continue to create some of the most beautiful music you are ever likely to hear. Ian Foster – The Interview

Newfoundland Singer-songwriter Ian Foster joined us on Folk Roots Radio on June 14 2014. He’s just released his latest album “The Great Wave”. The Bombadils – In The Studio

Montreal-based progressive celtic/bluegrass band The Bombadils joined us in the studio on May 10 2014. Their music draws from Québecois, Irish, and bluegrass folk influences but as a whole it’s pure Bombadils; a decidedly contemporary sound that combines soaring melodic lines, tight rhythmic energy, and virtuosity.

Formed in 2009 at McGill University, the band has performed regularly since then around Montreal in pubs and cafés while completing their studies in jazz and classical music. They released their debut CD “Fill Your Boots!” in 2012 and will release their new album, tentatively called Grassy Roads, Wandering Feet (after a Yeats poem that forms that basis for a song on the new album) later this year.

Clela Errington – Folk Roots Radio Interview

One of the pleasant things about programming a radio show is that every now and again an album crosses your desk, from someone you’ve never heard of, that really makes you sit up and take notice. That happened again a couple of weeks ago when “More Love and Happiness” the latest album by Toronto based singer-songwriter Clela Errington arrived in the mail. Very rootsy, a bit jazzy with some interesting world beat influences thrown in; its become an instant hit on this show. We were so pleased to finally hook up with Clela for an interview. The good news is that she will be in the area on Saturday March 29 2014 for a show at Music in the Wood Rockwood at 8:00 p.m.

Ondine Chorus

Singer/Songwriter Kev Morse joined us in the studio on Folk Roots Radio on March 15 2014. Kev previewed songs from his upcoming album “In The Blood”. In the Blood is the follow up to 2010’s “Live Under The Broom Tree”. It was recorded with Greg Woods on drums, Jeremy Giesbrecht on bass with keyboards/production by Tim Alberts. The new CD also features a killer string section with Sharon Tiessen on cello, and Sahra Featherstone on violin.

The Wild Oats – In The Studio

Ross McKitrick and Rick Avery from Guelph-based celtic band The Wild Oats joined us in the studio on December 7 2013 to play a few songs from their latest CD, “Dog-eared Hymnal Vol 1” and play a few songs. Dog Eared Hymnal Vol 1 features 29 hymns and folks tunes arranged into medleys of jigs, reels, waltzes and airs. The CD celebrates the musical connection between the English hymnal and the traditional Celtic repertoire. Beloved hymn tunes handed down for generations come alive in their alter ego as reels, jigs, waltzes and airs. The Wild Oats are Ross McKitrick (small pipes, pennywhistle and bodhran), Rick Avery (guitar), Jonathan Avery (fiddle), Nicole Ensing (piano), Tom Van Milligen (bass) and Daniel Warren (trumpet). Proceeds from the release of Dog-eared Hymnal will help support the work of World Vision Canada.

The Sweet Lowdown are Amanda Blie on guitar, Shanti Bremer on banjo and Miriam Sonstenes on fiddle. Equally comfortable in trad, celtic and bluegrass genres; live they exude such brightness and exuberance that you wish that you could sit and listen to them all day. Their second album, the Canadian Folk Music Award nominated May was released in 2012. We caught up with them at Folk Music Ontario in October 2013.

David Ross MacDonald – The Interview

David Ross MacDonald is a guitarist and singer-songwriter with an interesting past. A trained geologist, he is also a jazz turned folk-roots drummer for acclaimed Australia band, The Waifs. He’s equally well-known for his gorgeous finger-picking instrumentals as for thought-provoking lyrics and a languid vocal style that can give you goose bumps. His most recent album is Thorns to Sleep (2010). He also has an mp3 album “Live at the Elora Acoustic Cafe” available via his website. He may hail from Australia but he’s no stranger to Canada.
